Local & Legendary
Maine in the Civil War
Maine Memory Network
Through a grant funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Maine Humanities Council and the Maine Historical Society are coordinating a 2 year collaborative project with communities around the State of Maine.
Local & Legendary: Maine in the Civil War is a program that brings local libraries, historical societies and schools together for a community project focused on the American Civil War. This collaborative project has several major components and can be enjoyed on many different levels by the members of our community (and beyond).
The project includes:
- Online digitization and uploading on Civil War era artifacts and documents in our respective local archives. Through the Maine Memory Network, we will have an online exhibit and narrative about our community before during and after the war.
- There will be 4 book discussion programs (as part of the One Book One Community program). We will be reading “Soldier’s Heart” by Gary Paulsen. Both high school and middle school students in SAD 53 will be participating in this read, as well as community groups of adults (please inquire at the library for more info). The discussions will be facilitated by someone who is an expert in the subject matter as well as an experienced discussion facilitator.
- Finally there will be some sort of performance piece to help conclude the program year. This may be theatrical or dramatic, or abstract and representative, regardless, it will help bring new meaning to the local understanding of war, and the related factors that impact a community now as it did 150 years ago!
